How We Test SEO Tools

By Prices checked October 23, 2026No test results yet

How we test SEO tools comes down to two jobs: checking what vendors publish, and running tests of our own. As of October 23, 2026, every price on this site has been read on the vendor's own page and dated, and no test has run yet, so every tool carries the label Test pending. This page explains both, plus our math and how we handle corrections.

How We Check SEO Tool Prices

We check SEO tool prices on each vendor's own pricing page and record the date we read them. Prices are monthly billing unless a page says billed yearly, and each stays in the vendor's own currency. Nightwatch sells in euros, so its Starter plan stays €99 a month here and is never converted.

Vendor pages don't always agree with themselves, and we say so when they don't. SE Ranking's rank tracker page still says plans start at $119 a month, while its pricing page starts at $129. AccuRanker's pricing page shows its yearly-billed rate up front ($224 for Professional), while the monthly price is $249. When pages conflict, we use the pricing page and note what the other page claims.

Review-site scores get the same care: the score, the number of reviews, the site and the date we read it. G2 and Capterra block automated reads, so we take their scores from search results and say so. Anything we could only find second-hand, such as a third-party revenue estimate, stays off the page or is marked unconfirmed.

How We Calculate Cost Per Keyword

We calculate cost per keyword by dividing the monthly price of a tool's cheapest plan that includes rank tracking by the number of keywords that plan tracks. SE Ranking Core costs $129 for 2,000 keywords, so one tracked keyword costs about $0.065 a month. SpyFu Basic costs $39 for 5,000 keywords ($0.008 each), and Moz Pro Standard costs $99 for 300 ($0.33 each), a spread of about 40 times.

The number is a starting point, not a verdict. SpyFu updates rankings weekly and SE Ranking daily, and we could not confirm Moz's schedule, so the cheapest keyword is not automatically the best buy. Local tools bill by map points, locations or location keywords instead, which our local SEO tools guide converts job by job. The full table for nine trackers is on our rank tracker prices page.

How Test 01 Will Check Rank Tracker Accuracy

Test 01 will check rank tracker accuracy by asking one question: does a tracker report the page Google shows a real person? Each search will run twice, once through a rank tracker's automated check and once in a real person's browser, with the same keyword, location and device.

The Test 01 rig, planned One search goes in and splits into two lanes: a rank tracker’s automated check and a real person’s browser. Both result stacks land in Compare, where positions 2 and 3 do not match. The result would go to a tool’s plate, which still says Test pending. Illustration, not test data. The result goes on the tool’s plate with the date it ran. Until then, Test pending.

We will then line up the two result lists position by position and mark every place they differ, including where the tracked site appears in each. A tracker earns trust when its list matches what the person saw.

Results will go on their own page with the dates the searches ran. Each tool's spec plate will then switch from Test pending to the test's name and date. Prices keep their own date, because a plan can change the day after a test.

Why Rank Tracker Accuracy Matters in 2026

Rank tracker accuracy matters more in 2026 because AccuRanker, which sells a rank tracker, reports that Google has been serving swapped organic results to automated sessions. By AccuRanker's account, smaller rounds began in late January 2026, a big step came on September 24, 2026, and Google tightened it again on October 15, 2026.

Source for stages 1 to 4: AccuRanker’s own reports, a vendor’s claims rather than our test.

If a tracker reads a swapped page, the position in a client report is not the one the client sees. AccuRanker says its re-fetch and history checks cut affected pages to roughly 1% to 2%; that is a vendor's claim about its own product, and claims like it are what Test 01 is for. You can read AccuRanker's report on poisoned SERPs for its side. Trackers face other strain too: SE Ranking's status page, last updated September 25, 2026, reports delayed Google updates and missing positions beyond page one or two.

SEO Tool Test Results So Far

SEO tool test results so far come to none: Test 01 has not run, nothing has a score yet, and every tool on this site reads Test pending. That holds for tools that pay us and tools that don't. Until a test runs, our picks are reasoned from published prices, plan limits, trials, refund terms, update frequency and review-site scores, and each pick says so. We give no stars, no scores of our own and no winner badges, and we never write as if we had used a tool for months. Tools that don't track rankings, such as content and reporting tools, stay Test pending until we publish a test that covers them.

How We Handle Corrections to SEO Tool Reviews

We handle corrections to SEO tool reviews the same way every time: tell us, and we fix the page and change its date. Email hello@seotoolstested.com with the page, what is wrong and, if you can, a link to the page that shows the right fact. We check it against the source; if we were wrong, or the vendor changed something, we update the page and its date.

Prices move often, which is why the date matters. SE Ranking dropped its $65 entry plan in February 2026, AccuRanker dropped its $129 plan and its free trial in late 2025, and BrightLocal raised its prices between February and October 2026. Vendors can send corrections the same way and get the same check. A commission never buys a change; our affiliate disclosure lists what every program pays.
